Our food culture is broken. While a national movement of small-scale, grassroots organizations are working toward a more sustainable food future, more must be done to return hard working Americans to a truly sustainable occupation: feeding the country ethically.
A corps of farmers -- perhaps called the Civilian Cultivation Corps -- would provide much-needed jobs. Job training would be offered to conventional farms ready to get back to basics and farm organically. New farmers also get training to use their hands and their minds to raise healthy, honest food.
This corps will employ Americans in rewarding, well-paying jobs to localize foodsheds, and reaffirm the nation's core agrarian values. It will also give Americans what they have been asking for: clean, safe, affordable, and local food
