Create Atchafalaya Swamp National Park in Louisiana

Created by L.B. on July 29, 2014

The purpose of this petition is to preserve the swamplands in South Louisiana that are in or near the Atchafalaya Basin. The boundaries of the park would include all of the Atchafalaya Basin surrounded by flood levees, swamps outside the levee boundary originally part of the Basin, and Wetlands near Vermillion Bay and West of Cocodrie, Louisiana in Terrebone Parish. Hunting would still be allowed in the National Park, as it is the way of life for the people who live here. Logging and deforestation would be banned. New trees would be planted in order to restore the swamp back to its former glory. A Visitor's Center would be built near Henderson, Plaquemine, and Morgan City. The National Park, will not only serve as a focal point on the nation's map, but will also preserve a unique habitat.
