This is the best deterrent to crime. If someone thinks "If I steal this, I might never again be able to buy a beer" that is something they can relate to.
Mentally Competent, Law Abiding, Citizens should not have their freedoms restricted. Instead, find ways to restrict the ability for criminals to buy Alcohol, and ANY Weapon.
