Bicyclists benefit from roads, signs, stoplights, police protection, traffic laws and legislation. Unfortunately, cyclists to not pay into those services.
There are as many as 100 million bicycles in the U.S. With the increased popularity of bikes, less people are purchasing fuel for their cars. That lost revenue is hurting local, state and federal governments.
Bicycle owners should pay the following taxes and registration fees:
Registration fee (annually): 5% of original value of bike, per bike in each household.
Tax (annual): 0.5 cents per dollar of original value of each bike OR 0.01 cent per mile used, per bike (greater of 2).
Cyclists benefit from roads and should pay for services. Instituting a "Bike Use Taxation and Registration" system will ensure they pay their fair share.
