Over 5.5 million people have died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for the control of the minerals used to create electronic devices present in our cell phones, laptops, and etc. The four minerals from the DRC are Tin, Tungsten/Coltan, Tantalum, and Gold. There is a high possibility that most of our electronic devices contain minerals from the DRC. It is estimated that 80% of the world’s coltan reserves are found in the DRC. People in the DRC face some of the worst crimes against humanities because of militias being funded by conflict minerals. We demand corporations to sell conflict free electronics, show transparency in their supply chains, a creditable certification process should be made to track the minerals, and Obama to educate the public about this important issue.
