The purpose of this petition is to create a federal advisory committee to advise states to create a bottle deposit on all beverage containers, to include, but not exclude, water, juice, pop/soda, and alcohol. This would drastically decrease the amount of beverage bottles ending up in our waterways, roadsides & landfills. In addition, an increase in recycling will assist in allowing lower prices for goods that can be made from recycled materials. Many states, including Michigan, have a successful bottle deposit policy currently in place. Consumers pay the deposit fee (5-10 cents) at the time of purchase and receive the fee back when the bottle is returned. The fees from bottles that are not returned would/could be divided between the state, the retailer & the bottling company.
