An MIT study concluded that a 20-dollar per ton carbon tax would create $1.5 trillion in revenue in ten years. John M. Reilly, writes in his study "With the carbon tax there are virtually no serious trade-offs. Our analysis shows the overall economy improves, taxes are lower and pollution emissions are reduced" He thinks over the next thirty years a well placed Carbon tax could increase welfare by 18.1 percent over the baseline. Welfare is the change in aggregate market consumption plus change in leisure. It will push us towards energy independence according to John Farrell and David Morris 3/5ths of states could be energy independent on renewable resources. The tax makes companies invest in green tech and could potentially lower carbon emissions to 35% less than 1987 by 2015.
