Create a certification, similar to the USDA Organic process, that food is free from Genetically modified organisms.

Created by B.B. on November 13, 2012

Under current law, there is no restriction that Genetically modified organisms be labeled as such. Such mandatory labeling is opposed by producers who claim that genetically modified organisms do not carry any health risks to consumers. Mandatory labeling laws also carry the risk that food will include genetically modified organisms without the knowledge of those selling it, similar to farmers sued successfully by Monsanto for unknowingly violating patents with saved seed. Knowing food is free from genetically modified organisms is important to some consumers. A voluntary 'Genetically modified organism free' certification, backed by government approval, is the best solution. The USDA Organic certification process should function as the template for a voluntary program.
