I want to get rid of pennies, and then later even get rid of nickels. Having only dimes and quarters as the "change we can believe in" we pay for things to within five cents.
For example, if something costs $2.34, we pay two dollars and a quarter and a dime. If we pay three dollars -- the change is 66 cents -- we get back two quarters and two dimes. It will reduce the amount of change, especially pennies, and if we also get rid of nickels, that will make everybody smarter and more forgiving.
Call it, Change We Can Believe In. Everybody will feel a lot warmer towards you, because everybody hates a lot of change, especially pennies.
