The problems with wind and solar energy being used in mass today are many, but the critical 3 are energy storage/portability (batteries are not good enough yet), energy transmission (people don't want power towers across the landscape, but locations for wind and solar power generation are far from the need), and consistent production (solar at night, etc.).
There is a relatively simple solution. Locate solar and wind power facilities in the wide open areas that they make the most sense in, and with them locate plants which use that electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen is the storage media for the energy. Hydrogen can be burned like natural gas to generate power, to power cars, or in fuel cells in homes and offices: in all cases clean and 100% American.
