Marriage has long been defined as a union between one man and one woman. This definition has deep religious roots which have come to dominate politics in a country based around the separation of church and state and freedom, religious freedom included. This not an excuse for discrimination and the denial of human rights that many United States citizens still do not have.
We petition for consenting human adults to have equal rights regardless of sex, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, creed or otherwise, and for the definition of marriage to be permanently changed as such in the form of a constitutional amendment. This amendment would echo past amendments that also deal with equality and civil rights (1, 9, 13, 14, 15, 19, 26) and the attempted Equal Rights Amendment of the 70's.
