Our industrial system produces many consumer and commercial goods that cannot be recycled or composted. We have a finite amount of natural resources in our country and in our world, and the trash continues to pile up, pollute our air and water, and costs citizens a great deal of money.
This petition urges the United States government to create a mandate on all producers of consumer goods to take back all non-recyclable components of their products by paying for their safe disposal or return to the company for re-purposing. These costs should not be borne by consumers and businesses who have no choice but to purchase non-recyclable goods.
This program should be supplemented with a national recycling mandate for all local waste management providers to provide recycling services.
