As there is already support from those who can "afford to give a little bit more", if the White House and Congress could agree to allow taxpayers to voluntarily tax themselves at a higher rate, those additional funds could be used to offset debt and deficit without the gridlock and bluster of a partisan debate on changes to the tax code.
These voluntary, self-imposed taxes would not be considered a donation, and would therefore not be tax-deductible, but would rather be a democratic exercise for those of us who willingly choose to pay more than we are required to do as a show of our belief in America.
This would allow for supporters of increased taxes on the wealthy to "put their money where their mouth is" in the most literal sense possible, and to set a non-mandated moral example.
