It is imperative to elevate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to a cabinet level agency by transforming the EPA into the US Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) in order to protect the environmental commons and assure environmental justice is foremost in government policy. This measure long overdue, is critical in order to respond to global warming and anthropocentric ecocide which has reached crisis proportions. DEP will be better able to withstand political pressure than the current EPA and will have a mandate to protect both the natural and the built environment from the worst consequences of ecological crisis.
