Drug resistant infections are arising with increasing frequency. Soon routine infections will be cause deaths at rates that will take us back to the days before Penicillin was invented.
The NIH is not tracking drug resistant infections in a systematic way, and the drug industry has stopped developing new antibiotics. At the same time antibiotics are being overused by many doctors, and in the meat and egg industry, which is making the problem of resistance worse.
We need the NIH to develop data on antibiotic resistance and initiate government funded programs to develop new antibiotics to phase in as existing antibiotics become ineffective.
