Our country, despite a developed country, has a population that is still growing by about 180 people every hour. This means more and more people to house, supply food, fuel, water, sanitation and other needs. Population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet that is already resource stressed. It also increases poverty and increases chances of conflicts and wars for limited resources at local, national and global level.
It is time to start a department of population, to conduct studies on how much population is sustainable, educate the public about the population problem and its connection with other problems, examine alternatives to the unsustainable growth oriented economic system that indirectly promotes population growth and look at democratic means of population regulation.
