A Director of Mental Health should be created to promote a country where mental illness is better understood, and people who suffer from mental illness are supported.
A significant study in 2012 estimated that 43.7 million US adults had a mental illness in the past year. Even though mental illness impacts so many lives, it's commonly a taboo subject, and sufferers are often depicted negatively.
The director should promote better education and positive discussion on mental illness symptoms and treatments, so individuals can more confidently seek help for themselves and/or loved ones.
The director should also develop policies/laws that protect sufferers and their loved ones, so they aren't negatively impacted when they seek help.
