President Obama called upon Congress to increase the minimum wage, which hasn't been changed since 1994, in his State of the Union address. While Congress does not seem able to pass a bipartisan agreement on the matter, the country can't wait. The President needs to create an executive order barring government offices from hiring contractors who pay their works below the current living wage. As detailed in the linked Economic Policy Institute article, forcing contractors to pay a living wage would have little to no negative effect on government fiscal health while having positive effects of worker productivity and satisfaction as well as boosting the American low-income family.
