Private prison corporations such as the CCA have lobbyists working to make money through harsh policies and longer sentences.
The incarceration rate in the USA is the highest in the world - we don't need harsher sentences for victimless crimes.
Not only will we be spending our tax dollars on keeping people who don't belong in prison incarcerated, but ruining the lives of many poor and middle class people while the people running and investing in these prisons will be making a profit from their misery.
