According to child fatality reports of national school bus loading and unloading published by the Kansas State Department of Education, our children are at high risk. In the last 3 reporting years, 32 children have died. In the last 2 reporting years (2009/2010 & 2010/2011), Georgia lead the nation in child deaths - according to the KS DOE report.
While researching root cause, this petition's creator received the following from a rural local school system's Superintendent when asked about training for school system employees, "This admittedly is one area of required training that could be strengthened for our bus drivers. since they usually are not trained..." The Georgia DOE appears to be "reluctant" to get involved, as a result, we need Federal-level oversight.
