We pay premium prices for which we believe aid is being given to these poor farmers. To sum up the issue in brief, fair trade coffee is increasing in popularity and sales among consumers, but the strict requirements for certification are resulting in unfair economic advantages for coffee producers in South America. By inadequately addressing this issue, the fair trade coffee tag is losing its weight while failing to address some of the poorest coffee farmers in the world. New regulations would create better guidelines that guarantee that the premiums paid for this coffee reaches the poor third world farmers who need it the most. With a new agency, policies could be put in place that ensure these funds are being used to help those most in need.
