Second generation ethanol production is now a viable alternative to corn based ethanol production. US Companies are developing technology that will make these processes carbon neutral (and they are already approaching this).

Moso Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants on the planet and can be harvested continually over a 3 year period of time. This immense growth rate can allow for a quicker turn over time in ethanol investments as well as a secure fuel source to replace oil based products.
Additionally the areas within the Gulf that are prime growing regions for this plant are right next one of the largest sources of (free) fertilizer run off: the Mississippi river.
