We need smarter gun control. I'm proposing a middle path on gun control.
1) Mandatory criminal background checks for ALL gun transactions. A transaction is exempt only if the buyer is law enforcement or currently holds a valid license to carry a concealed weapon. Make the fee affordable ($5 or less per gun transaction and available to ALL Americans).
2) Create a national mental health registry or maybe require a signed affidavit from a MD or psychologist verifying a person's mental health records (valid for 5 years). Buyers that have a record of severe mental conditions (ex. schizophrenia,etc.) are ineligible to purchase or own a gun.
3) Severely punish those individuals who violate these gun policies.
Compromise! I am a law abiding gun owner & a gun violence survivor.
