This is a petition to make puppy mills (or "breeding kennels") unprofitable by cutting out their main market. Approximately 3,500 pet stores in the U.S. sell puppies. They sell about 500,000 every year. Half of these puppies carry genetic disorders and only 10% will stay with their original owners. They are taken from the mother between 5-8 weeks old, this is too soon to properly socialize the puppy which in turn causes dogs to develop behavior problems such as aggression and severe anxiety, which they are commonly euthanized for. The conditions in the majority of puppy mills is atrocious and almost all breeding females will eventually be brutally killed or dumped when they're no longer "profitable." This issue is especially important as the number of homeless pets rises.
