Mahatma Gandhi once said that, "the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” We need reasonable laws to protect animals and marine life from cruel and abusive treatment. We need laws to punish the offenders with substantial jail time and fines. Animal rights is a valid issue and the current state of animal welfare in America needs to change now. All animals including, but not limited to, the ones in our homes, the ones in our factory farms, and the ones in our forests and oceans deserve the same amount of support and compassion. We take animals for granted and treat them as objects. We forget that they are sentient, intelligent persons. Laws protecting animals is the least we can do for how much we benefit from them every day.
