The real focus of the current debate on gun policy comes down to one simple line: are the weapons designed for military purposes, i.e., killing a lot of people, or are the weapons designed for self-defense purposes, i.e., killing only one or a couple of people who pose a threat to their life.
In terms of self defense, a revolver or shotgun will usually suffice. Police standard handguns are acceptable.
However, guns like the AR-15 are military designed killing machines. Gun clips that offer 20, 30, or 50 or more rounds are designed for killing masses of people.
There should be clear legislation that designates AR-15's, assault riffles, and high capacity clips as weapons of war, while normal handguns and hunting rifles can be designated as weapons of self defense.
