Every year, thousands of people are caught with small amounts of illicit drugs. Law enforcement entraps them by offering to drop otherwise life-shattering charges in exchange for helping bust larger dealers.
Up to 80% of drug busts involve informants like these, and officials have acknowledged that without them, uncovering drug dealers and setting them up would be much more difficult.
Youth that have been killed during these operations include Chad Macdonald, Rachel Hoffman, and Shelley Hilliard among many, many others. The families of informants almost never see law enforcement take responsibility for their dangerous and reckless actions.
We demand legislation to set guidelines and hold officials accountable in the case of informants being hurt or murdered.
