The Black Lives Matter movement has highlighted a trend in recent American history; the killing of unarmed African-American males by police. Also in the last several years the FBI have pressed charges against elected officials.
Since crimes of both types rely on the authority of their governmental position to commit their crime and hence erode public confidence in the government, those who break the law under the guise of governmental authority should be subject to increased punishment.
In crimes committed by local, state, or federal officials, where the criminals position was used to commit the crime, punishments should be increased in a manner similar to hate crime legislation.
