Create legislation that prohibits anyone who has a history of a violent mental illness from buying firearms legally.

Created by W.E. on December 17, 2012

Since 1982, 61 mass shootings have occured. Of these most have two things in common; 1) they acquired their guns legally and 2) have a history of a potentially violent mental illness. In saying such we the people request that the United States legislature create a law requiring all mental healthcare professionals to report people who have a violent mental illness, or history of one, to prohibit them from being able to legally obtain firearms. This would operate much in the same way as prohibiting felons from legally purchasing firearms by raising a red flag during the background check while attempting to purchase a firearm. In doing so, many mass shootings or murder/suicides would be avoided as there would be no legal way to purchase firearms for people whom have a violent mental illness.
