Voting is an essential part of American democracy. It insures that people have a voice in their government. The voter turnout rate(percent of people eligible to vote that actually vote) has been below 60% in presidential since 1972.
Why aren't more people participating in voicing their opinion of how their country is run? One answer is people not being able to afford taking time off work to vote or not being able to take off at all.
Some state already have laws that require paid leave for workers voting. States with high voter turnout rate such as Minnesota (76.1% in 2012 presidential election) , Iowa (70.3%) , and Colorado (69.9) have these laws.
More people will vote if more people can afford to take time of work.
