It is well known that the chronic diseases that affect the overwhelming majority of Americans - cardiovascular disease, cancers, stroke, diabetes, dementias, lung diseases, and so forth - are all preventable through a healthy diet and exercise. Yet we continue to condone a 'health' care system that does little more than wait for disease to emerge, then manage it with the most expensive tools available. Although the initial investment costs would be high, creating access to wellness promotion through healthy food and community exercise centers would eventually dramatically reduce the incidence of chronic disease and the costs of health care. This would benefit the economy by allowing people to work longer and rely less on government funding of Social Security and other entitlements.
