15 of the worst 25 mass shootings in the world in the last 50 years have taken place in the U.S. Yet after every highly publicized murder with with a firearm in our country, the comments from the right and left are predictable, and do not lead to any action. Also as part of these predictable comments, we are told that the time to discuss this issue is not in the immediate aftermath of the horrific tragedy because people need time to grieve. Then our attention turns to other types of tragedies and important public policy issues, and, lo and behold, nothing changes.
We need to find a way to have a real, meaningful conversaton about gun violence in this country, and by forming a national commisson we can, at least, give a framework to how, and when, this important conversaton can begin.
