Consistent with the US Department of Justice's National Public Sex Offender Website, we propose a mandatory jurisdictional registry of convicted domestic abuse perpetrators.
The jurisdictional registries should be consolidated nationally by the US Department of Justice in the same way as the sex offender registry, so that people have a single place to search for potential domestic abuse perpetrators nearby.
Domestic abusers should be defined as any male or female adult who is convicted of violence against a spouse or child within the same household.
Convicted abusers often continue their cycles of abuse by hiding the past, lying about convictions, and charming their way into a new relationship. A registry would make this secrecy much more difficult to maintain.
