The United Nations has declared that internet access is a human right. However, right now, 10% of US homes aren't connected to the infrastructure necessarily to access high-speed internet. Further, the companies responsible for building the existing infrastructure - including Comcast, Time-Warner, Verizon, etc. - have no impetus to expand that infrastructure further.
This petition calls on the US government to create a nationwide fiber-optic network extending to ALL US homes. This would create jobs, reduce megabusinesses' monopoly control over internet access, and ensure that rural, low-income households would have the same level of access to the internet as urban, high-income households, which is crucial to leveling the social and economic playing field.
