Create a national holiday that celebrates the end of slavery and honors those who were lost and suffered then and since.

Created by J.G. on January 21, 2016

My fellow Americans. This is a petition to ask President Obama to push for the creation of a national holiday that celebrates the end of slavery. And honors those who lost their lives and suffered during that horrific time. But also to honor and remember those who have died and suffered since because of the after effects of the institution of slavery. We have come a long way, but we have so much farther to go. Maybe, just maybe by creating a national holiday that celebrates the 13th amendment and the death of slavery. We can not only help our nation take full ownership of that horrific part of our national identity. But perhaps this could also help all of us to end this division that is acting as a destructive cancer in our great republic. Maybe this could really help us heal.
