The United States government currently has a history of remembering only those service members killed in active duty in combat situations in defined wars and not service members who die in non-combat situations.
Those members who die in non-combat situations while on active duty, do so while also serving their country. Many die in accidents related to equipment/situations they are placed in as well as natural causes and illness. Most are direct results of their service to this country and while away from their families.
I propose that President Obama create a medal honoring any service member who dies while on active duty in a non-combat situation and that it be retroactive. I also propose that a National museum be created to honor service members who die in non-combat situations.
