Create a national referendum system for the public to vote directly on important issues

When it comes to important nationwide issues that affect all us Americans, it's important for all to have a direct voice. But when lobbying gets in the way of the public's majority opinion, our representatives can't always be trusted to do just that - represent the people. Other countries have referendums; why don't we? I propose a national referendum system where, at a certain time each year, voters go to vote not just for candidates, but for some hot-button issues themselves, in order to more accurately reflect what the public desires.
