I petition for a national star watchers night where city lights dim enough to see the stars.
As a developed country, we produce a large quantity of light pollution, especially in and around cities. As our cities grow, so does our light pollution. And with more light pollution, there are fewer places where stargazing can be carried out.
Because of this, America is losing one of its natural resources: its sky.
This petition is not asking for a permanent fix for light pollution. Nor does it offer a suggestion on how to determine which day. It is impossible for weather to be guaranteed to be clear for the night selected. It only asks that somehow, one night a year is set aside where light pollution is reduced enough for stargazing.
