It would be beneficial to offer a nationally recognized domestic partnership option to help the non-traditional families of today. Although in some states this is offered, others offer it only to same sex couples as they did prior to the availability of same sex marriage, and opposite sex couples do not have a non-marriage domestic partnership option, aside marriage itself. In other words, opposite sex couples have no choice but to marry should they wish to file joint taxes and share healthcare in some states. When unmarried parents share children, finances, and a home, it would be best to allow them to file joint taxes and share health insurance. It would avoid complex household duplication for tax purposes and allow better healthcare options for stay-at-home unmarried parents.
