Create a government agency solely responsible for the maintenance and expansion of the country's infrastructure. This agency should be run by licensed engineering professionals, who understand the infrastructure needs of the country best. The head of this agency should be a member of the President's Cabinet, and should be recognized in the engineering industry for their accomplishments and licensed. The goal here is to remove politicians from making uninformed decisions about infrastructure spending and expansion. Engineers are woefully underrepresented in Congress: the 109th Congress had only 5 engineering professionals amongst it's 535 members. This agency will bring engineers to the discussion on infrastructure spending, and better inform the government on the issues at hand.
