create a new CAFE category for "Family Car" which sits between the existing car and light truck categories.

Created by P.P. on November 23, 2011

Too many excellent family vehicles never arrive on American shores because they don't fit into the two narrow CAFE categories. Some examples include the Chevy Orlando, Buick Regal Wagon, Ford C-Max, Volvo V70, and the VW Passat AllTrack, all of which are available in Europe but not America. Other vehicles, like the Subaru Outback, have been modified for the US market to become light trucks in order to comply with standards. As those standards increase dramatically over the next 20 years, we'll see vehicles in the "car" category get smaller, and more and more families forced to buy "light trucks," which are much less fuel efficient than the family vehicles available elsewhere. This will entirely negate the fuel efficiency goals of CAFE.

American families need an option in the middle.
