Create a new law which will make every supermarket donate any unsold but consumable food that otherwise would be wasted

Created by T.J. on August 09, 2014

French MPs are currently drafting a new law "making it compulsory for supermarkets with 1,000 square metres (10,800 sq ft) of floor space to give their 'unsold but still consumable food products to at least one food charity.'" Such a law in the United States, a world leader in food waste, could provide food for millions that otherwise would have been wasted.

"In the United States, 31 percent—or 133 billion pounds—of the 430 billion pounds of the available food supply at the retail and consumer levels in 2010 went uneaten. The estimated value of this food loss was $161.6 billion using retail prices."
