So many Americans feel that decreasing the national debt is an important part of ensuring America's future as a world power. At the same time, so many citizens feel that having the wealthy bear the brunt of paying off this debt is unfair.
I propose a solution that would allow those unhappy with the national debt to put their money where their mouths are:
allow citizens who are interested in decreasing the national debt an opportunity to temporarily raise their income tax by a few percentage points--perhaps for three years. In return, those citizens would get three federal tax-free years (not including any current missed payments).
This way, paying off the debt isn't limited to the wealthy, but to anyone who cares to help the government solve this problem.
