The land mass of the United States is over 3.5 million square miles. With 640 acres per square mile, this amounts to over 2 billion acres of land.
The BLM and USFS steward close to 450 million acres in the US. Their mission statements are very similar and propose to 'meet the needs of present and future generations'.
An average person eats about 1200 lbs. of food per year. Apple trees produce approximately 25,000 lbs. of apples per acre. If an acre of apples could feed almost 20 people for an entire year, how many people could be fed if we all just planted one fruit or nut tree on a small portion of the 2 billion acres of land in the United States of America?
By planting fruit and nut trees in 2012 we could eliminate hunger in America by 2020.
