Recently a natural gas pipeline leaked and exploded in NYC, killing 8 people. The need to replace leaking pipelines particularly in older systems is huge--and at the current rate of replacement, we are decades from finishing the job. Philidephia, at its current rate of replacement will finish in about 70 years.
We ask that the federal government allocate $10 billion a year for pipeline replacement for the next decade. Utilities and states would have to maintain their current level of funding for these projects--this would be additional funding to accelerate these projects. This would create jobs, fix infrastructure, and save lives.
All pipeline materials used in these projects should be made in the USA, which would create additional jobs in manufacturing.
