Create a rent to own option on rental equipment when client reaches cost of product

Created by M.K. on April 06, 2013

I am proposing a mandatory rent-to-own option for equipment provided by media service providers such as Comcast and et-el. These companies charge recurring monthly fees for rental equipment such as modems. Customers overpay on these fees after the cost of equipment has been reached.

Although there is an option for the customers to use their own equipment, the companies usually deny technical support since they claim it is not their product. Therefore, many customers are forced to choose to rent the equipment and pay the recurring monthly fee, which in many cases surpasses the cost of the equipment.

Example: Average cost of a modem is $70. Comcast charges a $7 monthly rental fee. The full price of the modem is paid within 10 months, which is a shorter time frame than the contract term.
