The social and political implications for the discovery of alien(other world) life are broad. Life as we know it has always focused on Earth and its inhabitants. If alien life is discovered it will be a paradigm change in how we perceive ourselves as a species and planet. I believe it is important to create a discussion group that can properly analyze and discuss the political, moral, philosophical, religious, and other ramifications of this scenario. If a serious public discussion is begun at the highest levels of government, it is more likely to be taken seriously and seen as an actual possibility in the near future. If a discovery is made without any real groundwork on how to handle it having been done, I fear the response might be irrational, panicked, or worst of all, lackluster.
