While I am all for the CAFE standards to reduce vehicle emissions, more can be done to increase transportation efficiency.
Have you ever had to stop at an intersection only to wait while there was no cross traffic? Isn't it frustrating knowing that the only thing stopping you from continuing on your journey is the red light? As you contemplate this, your car is wasting energy.
What if stoplights KNEW there was no cross traffic and that you could use the intersection. What if the light could turn green early or, better yet, if it could have stayed green before you even stopped?
Here is how:
1) Stoplights that sense oncoming vehicles and can communicate with each other up and down a street. They can stay green with no cross traffic.
2) Roundabouts which increase efficiency and safety
