A space elevator is a tether that links the earth to an asteroid beyond geosynchronous orbit (stays above the same spot on the ground). It could offer unprecedented access to space at low cost which could provide all of humanity with new products that improve daily life. This is the next great step forward for mankind. This goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept.
Bradley C. Edwards received funding from NIAC to write a paper, describing a space elevator design. In it he stated that: "The first space elevator would reduce lift costs immediately to $100 per pound" ($220/kg).
