Create a Thousand-Year Infrastructure Program

Created by R.A. on February 09, 2013

America's physical infrastructure is in appalling condition. Much of it is old and past due for replacement.

We request the creation of a program for construction of infrastructure capable of functioning for a millennium or more. It should be structured as a contest; state and local jurisdictions will submit designs, the best of which will be selected by experts and built using federal money.

In addition to directly building improvements, this program will fill the larger goal of generating interest in infrastructure. Proposing designs will require analysis of infrastructure needs, and some losing jurisdictions will likely be inspired to make upgrades anyway. The contest itself will act as a goal for architects and engineers, and foster interest in pursuing those careers among the young.
